Sore throat or pharyngitis is the inflammation of the pharygnx due to a viral or bacterial infection. Tonsillitis may also occur simultaneously. This problem is common in children but can occur at any age. It may be also be a side effect of a disease or the result of talking or shouting a lot. Symptoms of sore throat are: 1. Pain in the throat, making it difficult to swallow. 2. The ears may also start paining. 3. The lymph nodes in the jaw and neck may get swollen as the body produces antibodies to fight the infection. 4. The throat becomes inflammed. 5. Cold, cough and fever
Usually sore throat is due to a viral infection. If there is a fever, paracetamol may be prescribed to reduce the temperature, otherwise the bodies immune system will automatically fight the infection. Sometimes, bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes can cause a sore throat. Coughing is rare for a bacterial infection. Erythromycin or pencillin is prescribed for treating bacterial infections
Home remedies provide some relief for a sore throat: 1. Gargling with warm salty water is a popular home remedy . Add 1/4 tablespoon of salt to 1/2 a cup of water. Repeat many times a day. 2. Warm tea, soup or honey provide some relief 3. Using a humidifier or steamer may prevent the throat from drying out. 4. Throat lozenges like peppermint candy reduce discomfort for a short period. 5. Gargling with a mouthwash may help. |
